'BIG LUNCH'
Sunday 18th July 2010
ARTTEEN for children and young people passionate about art (7-14yrs)
Managed by ARTaLIKE with sponsorship from Grassroots and NWLCF for 2009-2010.
The art course of 32 weeks, saw the group learning to use different materials with the last 10 weeks given over to painting.
The group, ARTTEEN, began their painting season with the subject of Twelfth Night and later, 'the big feast'. The work for the exhibition developed over 5 weeks from looking at such artists as Botticelli, Seurat, Matisse, Picasso and Manet to still-life props relating to 'food, eating and picnics'. Botticelli's Primavera, with its lush foliage carefully arranged leaving central space to depict Venus with cherub overhead, introduced a use of storytelling of Spring and Love while Manet's Dejeuner sur l'Herbe opened discussions on outdoor picnics with the wonderful display of fruit and bread in the foreground. Amongst all the controversy surrounding this painting, the children were quick to spot the almost camouflaged frog and finch.
The use of funding enabled us to deliver these workshops, at an affordable cost, to a wide range of children who would not otherwise have been able to afford classes. We had a very successful year which saw children with dyslexia, dyspraxia and autistic spectrum disorder achieve the most wonderful, delightful paintings and increased self-esteem.
